Lubeck,Germany wins hands down for me. 5th time back this year. Ryan Air cheapo flights, 10 minute bus ride into town. The most athomspheric place I have ever been over Christmas. You can do a day trip on the train to Hamburg but even better is local bus to Travelmunde which is a seaside resort.

I'd vote Prague as well - very pretty city in the winter, and lovely markets across several squares/roads. and some very cheap bars and accomodation!

Would it be worth hiring a car? Never been before so am a bit nervous about local buses etc with two children getting from airport to hotel and round about.
Sorry pjjafc, don't mean to take over your thread its just that I have been thinking about this for a little while now and your thread came up at thr right time.

I took Mrs Phatbear to Lubeck a few years ago and didnt think much of it the only good things about the place, as previously mentioned, is the cheap flight and closeness to the airport oh and the breakfast upstairs in the niederegger shop with their amazing pots of hot chocolate!!!

Me and my team went to dusseldorf just before xmas last year, sadly the chaps were abducted and forced to stay in bars allday but the wenches said they didnt think much of the markets.

No need to hire a car for Cologne, bus/taxi/train is easy from the airport CGN.

  • well our birmingham german xmas market is very good and involves little travelling:o
I hate the cold so if i was going to go anywhere id probably nip to somewhere like palma in majorca-they have lots of markets although not to the traditional german type affair and there is also a big factory outlet that you can go to on the train.
thats just me though-colder european countrys fill me with dread:(

If you're going to Cologne, it's quite close to Aachen, which has really beautiful sightseeing and a lovely market. Have fun! You can fly to Maastricht and get the train to Aachen - about 30 mins trip.
