Hi All,

I've been looking at both these compact cameras and wondered if anyone had any views on which is the better buy... or any links to great and reliable reviews?

OR even any suggestions of a great alternative?

Thanks...

http://www.dpreview.com/ is always a good starting point.

If you meant the Pana TZ7, you will find that was superseded this year by the TZ8 & TZ10

  • Hi,

You will find that they are both excellent cameras, the key difference is in the zoom. Panasonic has a longer range up to 12x optical zoom (equivalent to approx 300mm on an SLR) whereas the Canon is only 4x.

If you don't need to utilise this extra long zoom then there is nothing to choose between them other than the number if megapixels and the screen size (but both are less important than the lens quality which is excellent on both models).

See www.whatdigitalcamera.com for reviews or alternatively www.photographyblog.com/reviews I find both really useful. Good news is that there are lots of good quality choices out there for less than £200.

All the best with the decision making.

  • Looking at the specs alone, they are not identical. The Canon would have the edge at wide-angle (no zoom) shots as it has a 'wider' aperture of f2.8 (compared to the panny's f3.3)

I've got an ixus (rather old one) and a panny (3 of them.. ). Both very good. The only way i'd choose on this one is try them out and see what's built better / feels better

The TZ7 also holds it's own as a very good quality camcorder, recording 720P with Dolby Digital Sound.

Actually I don't think that's quite right, the Canon's larger maximum aperture lets more light in so you can use a faster shutter speed in low lighting conditions, but the Panasonic's lens has a shorter focal length at its widest setting so you get a wider-angle of photograph (the equivalent of 25mm on a 35mm camera as opposed to the Canon's 28mm).

I have a Panasonic Lumix and used to have a Canon Ixus, both are excellent cameras. The best way to decide is really to hold one in your hands and see which you prefer to use.

I have the TZ5 used as a happy snap on auto and have had the best, crispest photos ever! The lense is a Leica which says a lot.
