2 part question

My sisters laptop (Acer aspire 5535) usually works a treat, however in the last 2 days the screen will not work. If you boot the laptop up, you can hear it working but no picture, just a black screen.
After she let it run for around an hour or so, she restarted it and everything was fine. She tried again today and exactly the same happened.
Any advice would be appreciated.

2nd part, anouther family member is after laptop, never had one before. They have £500 max to spend (currys gift voucher), any advice.
The one stipulation is the fan must be as silent as possible.
No special graphic sheenanagins needed, they just have a gift card given to them for £500 and want to spend it on a laptop.
They did origianlly purchase an acer 5741, however everytime the internet was turned on the fan fired up after 60 seconds for 5 seconds then stopped, then 60 seconds later did the same, and so on. Apparently it was so annoying and loud it got sent straight back.

Thank you for any help that can be given.

Acer isn't the greatest brand. You could try looking at the Samsung and Toshiba models discussed in the free computers for families on low incomes thread, because they're not bad.

black screen is normally the inverter , remove the screws round the screen and tehn gently prise the bottom of the screen surround away from the screen with a fingernail (not a screwdriver ) and you should see it at the bottom and get one here

you can prove it by plugging a normal screen into to vga socket on the laptop and hitting the blue FN button and the screen symbol on F4 or f5 , if that works then its not the motherboard
