Furniture shop refuses to change order

Options
Hello all, i would be grateful for any advice:

I bought a bookshelf from a furniture shop 7 days ago which had an estimated delivery time of 12 weeks. I went to the shop today thinking that i would be able to cancel the bookshelf and instead order a larger (and more expensive) version of the same bookshelf.

Instead, i was told that the terms and conditions of the sale stated that any cancellations or changes had to occur within 2 days of purchase date, and that, therefore, i would not be able to change the order, despite a lead time of 12 weeks on the original item.

Can anybody please advise?

Thanks

  • It depends really on whether the company have actually ordered it and their suppliers terms and conditions. I am amazed they wouldn't let you upgrade though and unfortunately I think you are stuffed.
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

  • Thanks Googlewhacker. The item is of their own design, though i suppose a third party must manufacture them.

Yes, i am also surprised at how difficult they are being. The shelf is basically modular in design; the larger version is simply the smaller version with an extra 3 vertical modules attached to it. I could just purchase the 3 modules as a separate item to create a larger shelf... though this would work out more expensive than buying the single large unit.

I guess i should have read their T&Cs more carefully, although i hadn't expected that this particular retailer would operate such a restrictive and punitive policy, especially given the long lead time.
  • Oh dear, another newbie comes on here for absolution. What is wrong this time, pockets on the trousers to short, so hand gets into purse too quickly. The retailer does not have to offer you a refund at all. It is a travety of life that we do make minor mistakes as we go along.

This just happens to be one of them. At least they are considerate with the lead time of 12 weeks, letting you know when it is likely you may get the items.

Does the furniture shop have a headquarters? If it does, then I'd write stating that you find it bizarre that they won't let you upgrade your order and pay for a more expensive item, and could they explain why this is so.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

The 12 week lead time probably includes the boat from round the world.
The order is made after the cool off period, then shipped to the UK a few weeks later :)
  • FSB: a travesty indeed.

    @Pinkshoes
I telephoned today to clarify their policy and they have now agreed to amend the order.

    What coolling off period?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
