Natwest turned me down for a Switch card has my credit rating suffered??

Hi guys,

Right i have a card plus account which holds a switch card. I'm 16 by the way. But now i ask for one on my new current plus account and they have turned me down. Have i dented my credit rating this early on??

I'm going to Lloyds for a Dual-function Visa and closign my accoutn with natwest but has this effected my credit rating?

Cheers James

  • Hi,

At 16 you should not be able to hold a switch/maestro card anyway, it may be because of your age that the refusal was based as it is likely that options to offer you credit would have not taken any part in the application to open your new account.

    Regards
  • Your credit rating won't have been affected by getting rejected for the card, as NatWest would have used internal credit-scoring procedures.
As for closing the account, it probably won't matter as you're only 16 and you probably don't even have a credit rating yet!

It's simply because they deem your account conduct (or lack of, if it's a new account) isn't good enough to warrant giving you the Maestro card - age doesn't come into it. More money flowing in and staying in = less likely to abuse the privilege of a full debit card with cheque guarantee facilities... at least, that's what my branch told me.

I was in a similar position as you, and I went to HSBC who were more than willing to give a 16 year-old a decent debit card! I still kept my NatWest account, and now it's been upgraded to a Student account with a maestro card and interest-free overdraft...

You could always keep your NatWest account and just keep £10 or 20 in there, and leave the Solo card at home... you can use it as an emergency cash reserve if your wallet and your Lloyds visa debit card get lost or stolen! lol
  • Well i have a neigh on 900 going in and 300 staying in a month. I looked into the law.. Anyone who is 16 or over may obtain a Switch card but it's up to the bank to give it out. Tbh why don't they just not give me a cheque book then i wouldn't be able to use the CG feature at all!

I went to HSBC and had the worst customer service experience ever!

I may keep my Natwest account open. But i just got my new card through via courier tonight for my card plus and it's a cashcard!!

So i phone up Natwest to find out why. They said that my account isn't being used enough and doesn't warrent the card!!

Erm i got the card before i started work what figures ??? I didn;t have any money in the account when i got it!

Oh well Lloyds here i come!

I don't know why more banks don't do what Clydesdale Bank are doing. Maestro debit card with no cheque guarantee function (so a dual function card, but you cant get into debt with it) :) Just like the Lloyds Visa Debit too.
