Problem Pyracantha
I planted a pyracantha in my garden about fifteen years ago. When it was planted, it was healthy and covered in red berries and was just a couple of feet tall. I prune it every so often and it is now about eight feel tall but has never had berries on it since that first year. It manages to flower well and seems to form berries but every year they go black and then die. I have a lovely clematis called The President growing up inside so I don't think it can be the earth. My neighbour also has a pyracantha and her's is always covered in berries. Does anyone know what's wrong with mine?

My hens are already busy fertilising it! When do you think is the best time to prune it and any idea why it would form the berries but they all just die off?

ok...the chicken poo might be a bit too stringent, might be an idea to get some lime, just to take the edge off...prune it now if it needs it, did mine again yesterday!been away for a while..need to get on financial track! debts.....Post Grad Student Loan, Northern Rock Loan, Egg CC, Halifax CC, A&L CC, A&L overdraftAllotment plot holder since Feb 2008 :j0

Hello
Is it planted against a wall?
They often are and the clematis suggests it may be.
It can be very dry beside a wall and berries setting and then dying may be due to thirst ....

It is planted next to a fence and the clematis grows up around it. I have other shrubs either side of it and they flower merrily and appear really healthy. It is such a shame not to get the berries.
