Need AVG Free 8.5

Options
I have been using Avg free version 9 for a while with no problems. However I have started work with a new company and version 9 is not compatible with their system.

They have given a list of compatible anti-virus and AVG is best of the bunch, however whenever I try to download version 8.5 is automatically upgrades to 9.

Can I download 8.5 - any comments gratefully received.

I would change to Avast its better and not so much a resource hogg that AVG has become. having AVG 8.5 would be leaving your computer open to attack from the viruses and holes in the program which 9 filled in.

Thanks both of you, problem is that Avast isn't on the list of compatible anti-virus the company requires, the others on there are Norton & Mcafree both of which Ive had problems with in the past.

Think will try Avast & see if they have a problem with it, if so then will download the AVG

    Thanks again!

Well tell the company their list sucks as Avast and Avira are better than AVG for detection and security. Norton is better than it was AVG is the new "old" Norton.

Who said that 9 was incompatable. It might be a case of some advanced user tweeking more than a default setting.

You have to run a system check & my pc kept failing because of the avg 9. Apparantly they update their systems regularly but this one hasn't been updated yet. Can't proceed with the rest of the process' I need to do till can pass the system check.

Its been a right pain in the posterior I can tell you and I've wasted my afternoon trying to sort it. Should have known to come onto MSE first!:rotfl:

What do you mean with "not compatible with their system"? What system?

And if it's for your personal laptop, why does it need to be "compatible"? If it's for your work PC, then the IT department should take care of it...

I don't really understand where the problem lies.

You've all missed a bigger problem...

AVG has only got a free version for non-commercial computers. If it is a work computer then work should sort it out. And if it is a personal laptop which is being used for work purposes then you might find that self-employed people are classifying their personal laptop as non-commercial computers, when in fact it is a business asset and so is no longer a non-commercial computer...

Whether or not you want to run the risk of being caught is your choice but it is an issue which needs to be mentioned.

And yeah, I won't comment about the appropriateness of AVG, or 8.5 vs 9 and whether or not the company should be forcing people to use outdated software, because I think enough others have mentioned it already...

I get your point, but I still don't understand what the antivirus needs to be "compatible" to. What makes the paid version of Avira incompatible (to what?) for instance?

I guess they have a kind of "approved" list of what the IT department believes are the best programs.
