Varnish turning yellow!!!

Help............

I have just repainted my wardrobe doors with white emulsion and they look really nice. Didnt want to paint them with satin wood or gloss as I like the real matt finish. However, I have coated them with an acrylic varnish which has made them turn a slight shade of yellow or dark cream!! Does anybody why this has happened? It is clear in the tin

I think you'll find that clear varnish does dry with a yellow tinge. I had the same problem as you some years ago after painting some built in wardrobes white, using eggshell paint topped off with a coat of clear varnish to give it added protection.

 The yellowy finish was dreadful so I ended up giving the wardrobes a sand down then repainting with the eggshell paint & leaving them varnish free.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

if you want a real flat eggshell finish try farrow and ball dead flat eggshell
  • use a matt white paint acrylic or oil based only emulsion walls and ceilings

This reminds me of my old wardrobes. Previous owner had painted over a varnish finish with cream emulsion(I think). It started to chip and we had to sand the lot off, it took forever!

I would sand and repaint with white eggshell which has a lovely almost matt finish. We used it on all the woodwork in our old house as it desnt show up imperfections as much as gloss or satin.

You can buy 2.5 l Dulux trade white eggshell (for painting woodwork) for about £17 in B and Q or similar.

I did exactly the same thing years ago, grey emulsion on wardrobe, varnished, disgusted, scraped varnish off and repainted grey.I was told a long time after that the "yellowing" is actually a "reaction" as emulsion is not meant to be varnished.
