No I've not been suspended/interviewed yet.
It all happened yesterday, so they still haven't noticed that the store had a cash difference of -£400 yet. I'm expecting a phone call within the next day or so.
I know I've broken company procedure so I'm expecting a dismissal. If I had a spare £400 I'd probably go in tomorrow and stick it in the safe and claim that I had miscounted the cash on Sat night
I've seen my manager do exactly the same; allow a customer to buy stuff on credit (strict company policy states no credit allowed), but they've always paid up before close of business. Just my luck that this customer decided not to.
I'll speak to the CAB on Monday morning and explain my situation. I expect to be sacked within the next week or so, so my Aug wage will see me through the next month, but after that I'm snookered.

If you do get sanctioned apply for JSA Hardship payments. To get those you have to demonstrate that either you or someone else in your household would suffer hardship if they refused to pay you benefit.

And to be fair, that's what I'd do in the same situation - is there no-one that you could borrow £400 from (family, etc)?

Even a loan (dare I say it, Provident?) - Yes, interest rates bordering on usury but affordable (£10/£20 per week) and it's got to be worth it in the long run - JSA is a pitiful £65.45pw (less if under-25) - you'd be better off financially taking the hit and learning from experience

B.E.N...I've just applied for a £400 provident loan, spoke to one of the agents and he's coming to see me on Tuesday. I'm back at work on Thursday, so fingers crossed i get approved. If I do get it, I'll stash the cash behind the safe and claim I was just careless.
I'd much rather have a disciplinary for carelessness/being clumsy than lose my job.
If this works I seriously need to start job hunting. The pressure at work is immense (not an excuse) and I only did what I did to get a sale for the company. No extra payments, commission or bonus, just overworked and seriously underpaid

Fingers Crossed - it's an awful situation to be in, but sometimes you just have to swallow it and engage in damage limitation.

    Just a quick update folks...
Phase one of damage limitation is looking much better than it did 24hrs ago.

I've managed to get £400 from 2 sources (paying it off within the next 2 months) and will be stashing it behind the safe 1st thing in the morning (after the cleaner, but before the manager turns up)

Phase two will involve telling some white lies and pretending to be clumsy.

Phase three - update cv, register with most high st & online employment agencies & get a job with slightly less pressure.

Thanks once again for your comments :A:A:A

I wonder if your manager is reading this thread...?

What if the customer comes in and pays up ? You'll be £400 over. That's as bad as being £400 under.

Slippery slope, this one, it really is.

Why not come clean and offer to repay the money? Your boss wouldn't be out of pocket and would be less likely sack you. You can tell him you've learnt your lesson the hard way. If I was your employer I would be impressed with your honesty and sense of responsibility.;)
