Dell lap top no speaker sound but sound via earphones?

I have read this is a common issue. Does anyone know how to fix it as currently no sound from speakers but does work via headphones. Lap top is a Dell 6400 Inpiron. Thanks.

try updating the drivers first - I'm aware a few 'first release' drivers were a bit pants
