Hi can't find a Forum for this so I've posted it here.
At the beginning of July I had a phone call from Wescot debt collectors saying that I had debt with Santander of £364.36. At this point I had no knowledge of the debt. I asked them what the debt was for and they did not know, so they would get back to me after they have made enquires. Another letter on the 23 July. This one asking me to confirm the last three address and dates.
I phoned again and they told me it was a debt with Abbey national. I closed this account in late 2000 subject to 30 day where the account is open to honour debit card payments. So I asked for statements from the account from when it became over drawn. They said they were sent at the same time 2nd class, which never turned up. 3rd Aug a photo copy of the original agreement of the account, this was after I had left for a holiday. When I got back today I found this letter and a final notice to come to an agreement or action will be taken.
Am I within my rights to ask for proof of the debt before I have to pay it.
And what should I do.
Thank you.

The best forum for this is the DebtFreeWannabe section. They are familiar with dealing with the likes of Westcott. If you do post this problem there, say that you have already posted here and add a note here to say you have reposted on the DebtFreeWannabe section.
As the debt dates from 2000, they will tell you it is Statute Barred and they have some useful template letters.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Sound advice above
With debts, they have to prove you owe the debt aswell as ownership of the debt.
Providing you havent contacted them or Abbey previously with regards to this debt, it would be statute barred after 6 years. Unfortunately many DCA's try scare tactics in order to get people to pay up - sometimes even on debts that are no longer recoverable or do not belong to the person in question. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Yes as others said it not unreasonable
Many of these companies are trying there luck until a debt is proven I would refuse to pay obviously dont say this to them just ask for prove
I wouldnt ring them either always do it in writing that way you got a paper trailHi can't find a Forum for this so I've posted it here.
