Barclaycard for a student?

Hi all

I wanted to get a credit card purely to build my credit rating, so no late payments etc etc..

At the moment I'm a student and have a student account with Barclays. I've heard that it would be wise to get a credit card with your current bank as they can see a detailed version of your financial history (savings accounts etc?). So I went on the Barclaycard website, but they had no student cards. They had Barclaycard Initial, but it says that this may be right for me if I earn over £10,000. But as I'm a student, I don't earn that much! Actually I don't have a job atm so my only income is from student finance.

I just wanted to know if I should still apply as I have an ISA and ofc the student account? Both are in credit by over £1000.
Absurdity x

Anything written above are my opinions/experiences and you don't have to care/believe them, afterall for all you know I'm a worker at a bank and I'm just trying to get you to buy our products :P

If you have online banking you can apply through it for a student credit card. For me the apply button I'm supposed to click never materialises. Not sure if this is because I haven't yet upgraded to a student bank account

Is this definitely still an active offer? The bottom of the page says the offers associated with it expired in 2006
  • I am a student too with a barclays student account and i have a credit card and also a savings account and a student overdraft with free interest. I went into my local branch and they sorted it all for me. They do it all on the computer after asking a few things and then you get a letter a few days later saying whether you can have the credit card or not.

I was told by branch to call barclaycard for application then told over phone that you need an income over £10k for a barclaycard and cant be a student... Anyone able to clear this up?

Earning under £10,000 means you're unlikely to get a decent card although I would still suggest applying for the Barclaycard Initial as I've known several applicants post here about successfull applications despite not meeting the income criteria.

If you currently have no outstanding debt the income is less of an issue :o

I have a Halifac CC with a £1100 limit with 0% for 10 months. They asked for income, I said £5k. All accepted. :)

    Was surprised though!
