Hi guys - I'm such a techno-phobe so apologies now!
I would like to connect another laptop to my wireless network (lodger moving in)
I am with BT and have a home hub. A much more computer savvy friend sorted it out when it arrived so that when my laptop turns on it automatically connects to the internet and as its wireless, I can get online anywhere in the house.
My lodger will also have a wireless laptop The problem is, I remember that my network is password protected so no one else can use it - and unfortuantly I don't remember the pesky password!
Is it a simple case of phoning up BT to get my password...then when she logs on she can go to internet connections, find mine, type in the password and she's off? Will it affect my own connection?
Many many thanks - and again, sorry for having so little knowledge!

BT don't know your wireless password, it's secure because only the user knows it!
If you can't remember it then you need to log into the router interface and check under the wireless settings.
Once you have it, she just searches for wireless networks, selects yours and enters the password.
Yes, it will affect your connection, as you will be sharing the same bandwidth, it all depends what she is doing on it. If she is streaming HD video then you can expect yours to slow down a lot, if she is just sending emails then no bother.
Renember that if she is downloading anything dodgy, then it will be logged against your IP address, and if you are on a capped tariff then you will not have any control over the monthly usage and could get surcharged. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks Macman that's really helpful - what's the router interface please?

It's the same browser page you will have used when you originally set the password:

My password is the same one that o2 gave me and it's printed on the bottom of the wireless box. It might be worthwhile checking under the box to see if a password is there.0

agree with above, look for a sticker on the actual wireless router.0

Thank you all - password was indeed on the back of the homehub and all sorted now!
Thanks again

PS: Make sure you are using WPA encryption. WEP is not secure and can be cracked in minutes.
Never really a good idea to use the default password anyway, all too easy to access it-as you have just found!.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
