My wife and i are members of the same gym. My wife has just descvered that the gym has been charging her an extra £10 per month. She contacted the gym to sort out the problem and was informed that they had increased her monthly fee in order to pay for maintenance work they have had done. What can she do, they say that there contract allows them to increase there charges at any time, but this can not be legal? can it? They are refusing to refund the money or drop the extra fee.

If paying by direct debit i believe they need to give you notice if the amount debited is going to be different - otherwise you can get a refund via the direct debit guarantee.
As for the raise, even if their contract allows it, i belive it needs to be under a certain % of the amount paid otherwise they need to inform you and allow you to cancel without penalty. I had a similar issue with Virgin Media and low and behold, after complaining to them and TS, i now get my services for the same price i was paying previously! You keep using that word.
