Notification when sent e-mails are read

I use Firefox and Yahoo e-mail - is there any easy way I can see when the e-mails I've sent are actually read please?

Yes. Click on the option to request a receipt. The reader can choose to ignore though.

The short answer is no. There is no completely reliable way with SMTP (the internet email "standard").

You can request a "Read Receipt", but almost every email client in existence permits the recipient to decline to send one when reading the message.

There are quite a few products out there (some free) that ~claim~ to be able to track when your message is read, but they all require something to be added to your email for it to be tracked, and this is generally quite easy to disable (without even meaning to) by the recipient.

The Subjects of threads go into bold in the forum index when there's a new post that you haven't yet read.

Try Googling for "Yahoo mail has been read" or something similar. As far as I can see the answer to your original question is No.

Personally I take offense when someone puts a read receipt on an email to me. I nearly always refuse to send it back.

I would think carefully before adding as standard a read receipt to every email. If you are considering doing this as part of a sales campaign or to people you don't know - don't do it.

I always set my e-mail program to "never send receipt" after all when I get snail mail, I do not send a letter back saying I have read it.

Seconded. On of the most annoying things you can do with email!

Expressing annoyance at the possibility of being sent a Read Receipt request is a bit academic if it's not possible in Yahoo Mail, which is what the OP wanted!
