Ideas for a hedge please
Hi
I have put a low conifer hedge around my front garden as we are right on the main road through the village we live in and I was fed up with people driving over my lawn.
I had some conifers in my back garden which were doing really well and transplanted these into the front hedge along with some hawthorn which was given to me.
The hawthorn is thriving but the conifers are dying off one by one and are looking really brown and sorry for themselves
.
Did I do wrong by transplanting them?
Do they not like the traffic fumes?
I have quite a few conifers in the back garden and these are doing really well.
Does anyone have any ideas for other plants I can plant in the hedge please.
Thanks very much.
Sue

What sort of conifers are we talking about here? How big? How old? If they were big enough to have grown a long tap root and if you broke it digging them up, there's not much hope. I've found conifers tend to need a lot more TLC and watering when you move them than sturdy native trees and shrubs. Take a look at what other people in the village are using as hedging to see what suits your area and grows well. You may even be able to beg a few cuttings. If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0

Rosa rugosa? Buddleia - well clipped. Try painting some big stones white and putting them along the bottom of the hedge 'til it matures. Might put off the inconsiderate drivers. Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0

Hiya ( my first post on MSE)
We're planting a new hedge later this Autumn, and have decided to go for Euonymus Alatus Hedge. I can't post a link as I'm a new. We're getting it from J Parker, online. Looks a stunning hedge, and as an evergreen it'll look good all year round.0 -
Hi
Euonymus alatus is NOT evergreen it is deciduous the information (here is your link) is wrong, it does however have wonderful autumn colour before leaf drop and great 'corky wings' on the stems. It also make more of a wild hedge as it will not take tight clipping.
Look here and here for info on suitable hedges.
emiff6 is right, conifers especially transplants in the growing season can need huge quantities of tlc. Best get pot-grown for an instant hedge and plant before end of Sept to give them a fighting chance.Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day0 -
I'm just starting a wildlife friendly hedge, and got an assortment of bare root plants delivered and planted just before last Christmas, most were only about a foot tall and all are now thriving and between 2-4 ft. Check out this site:

Thanks guys for all the advice. Wonder if we didn't give them enough tlc. Will have a look at the plants/websites listed above and try some of them.
Thanks again.0 -
Why do you not try as it is front garden that purple thorn plant which names escapes me, I find being a fan of the evergreens once they start popping there clogs your best ripping up and starting again .0

I'd go with the hawthorn every time. We've got long hedges and the sparrows love it, and it doesn't need many cuts per year.
