Gathering and storing veggie seeds?

I tried to save some of last years mangetout seeds to grow again this year. Not sure what I did wrong, but the pods went all mouldy and horrible.
Any advice on how to do better this year? - do I leave them on the plant till they go brown and dry (which I didn't do last year) and any other handy tips people can think of.

Mangetouts do that - you've done nothing wrong.

they go like that because mangetouts have very weak pods, which is what makes them good as mangetout and all peas go horrid as they dry off when the weather is awful.

Collect them when brown, leave them in a container with the lid off and once crispy and rattly; depod and leave them in an airy place until the pea is solid with no 'give' - you will tell as the rattling of the peas in the container changes from thuddy to a high pitched rattley noise.
