I've just got back from failing to help a friend set up a Netgear WG614 wireless cable router with their Virgin cable set up.

Their modem is an NTL 250.
I chose to use the set-up wizard CD that came with the router, and got stuck at the stage where it decided there was a static IP, whereas i though(?) that it should be dynamic.
Tried resetting the modem to no avail.
As time was limited I made my excuses and left.
If anyone has set up one of these combinations recently I'd be grateful for a walk through.

Pen.

    Static address for what?

    >Their modem is an NTL 250.<

My experience with this device is it's best to get the broadband working with PC wired to the MODEM, then insert the router and clone the MAC address from the PC. That way, the MODEM and the ISP don't know that the initial config has changed.

Forget the setup CD, you do not need it.

    Power everything down.
Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the netgear.
Connect the router to the PC using one of the four LAN ports.
Power up the cable modem and wait for it to sync.
    Power up the router.
    Job done.

My basically same, but no wireless, RP614, was installed as per KillerWatts post.

Ummm, for the internet connection I guess, however from what you guys are saying I'm overcomplicating matters.
I'll ask them to plug it up and see if it all syncs up and works.
Should have known better than use a set up disk.
