You can also make payments to a Barclaycard at a Barclays branch - they have a little form especially for it. That way you won't have to deal with call centres at all.

Also, like other posters have mentioned, you will probably still have a (very small) balance next month, for leftover interest, which will need to be cleared before they will close the account. I had a DD set up to pay the entire balance on my Egg card to close the account, thinking that would be that, but the next month a DD went out for around £1, to cover the final interest.

well im off to the bank today
and then im going to make them close my card later, if they can close it with an outstanding balkance they can damn well close it once its settled

i usually like closing cards, all that smarming, Well lynzpower you never know when youll need it " Me- yes, I do NEVER" "and the best one, " see a credit card can really help you budget" " ME, explain HOW you mean, only wht a credit card for me has meant is paying interesrt, leaving me less money to budget with..... " them "er erm"
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

You might find it helpful to write them letters to close cards - that way you never have to deal with people at all. Whenever I have more involved dealings with banks (ie other than paying a cheque in) I almost always conduct it by letter. That way I have a copy, I don't have to worry about a call centre droid trying to hard sell me something and there can be no confusion as to exactly what I expect the bank to do.
  • I would just post them a cheque, for the amount plus extra

and then let them have the admin cost of giving you a refund for a couple of pounds
