Help! I am an idiot and deleted my entire pictures file!

    I am very pleased to say that I used Recuva and have successfully recovered all the files. Thank you all for your support and advice and rest assured I shall not be attmepting a laptop clean up myself EVER AGAIN!

    write them to a dvd, and use the external hard disk to disk image your machines (including photos)

    Cleaning up was not the issue. Failing to back up was. If you back up now, you cannot have a problem in the future.
    Glad you got it sorted, but sooner or later your hard drive wlil fail (it's not if but when) so back up now.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
