    Make/model?
    Which OS are you running?
How much RAM do you have installed?
CCleaner only deletes what you ask it to and is quite safe.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    try a manual reset

To use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature from Control Panel, follow these steps:
    1. Exit all programs, including Internet Explorer (if it is running).
    2. If you use Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER: inetcpl.cpl
    3. The Internet Options dialog box appears.
    4. Click the Advanced tab.
    5. Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.
    6. When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
    7. Start Internet Explorer again.

I rarely use internet explorer because it takes ages and ages to start up, open new windows etc. I use opera mostly. Much faster, and better in my opinion.

Don't use firefox, because people worship it in the same god like fashion that people do with the iphone, and it's a huge memory hog on my low spec computer.

If you have a netbook it will never be lightening fast though

RAM: right click on My Computer, Properties, General tab. but I'm guessing that on an XP netbook you have only 1GB RAM.

  • Did you delete IE cache files in CCleaner? If not, I'd do so. If you've got a large cache it can take a couple of minutes.

Please also consider trying an alternative browser. Browser choice is very subjective and people get quite passionate about it, so try a couple and make up your own mind. I've found Firefox to be fine on my netbook, but I recently switched to Chrome and don't intend to go back. If you use either Firefox or Chrome you will be able to install extensions to block unwanted ads and flash elements (Adblock, Flashblock): this enhances security and significantly speeds up page-loading, as well as improving your browsing experience.
