iPhone 4 - In Recovery Mode but won't restore?!

I logged into iTunes earlier and saw that there was a newer version of the iPhone software available. Went to download it. Thought it had but obviously not. Now my phone is in recovery mode.
Every time I connect it to iTunes I get a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and I must restore it before it can be used with iTunes. I've tried restoring it but when I do, all I get is an error message saying that it can't be restored because an unknown error occurred.
I'm now without a phone. Anyone encountered this? Any solutions?

Try resetting it. Pressing both buttons and holding.
Then try to restoreSurvey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740 -
