Desktop needed for Uni

I am returning to Uni as a mature student and need a desktop to work on.

I have laptop thats dying by the day- Nvidia defect- and will not touch HP or ever buy from Tescos again.

Im choosing a desktop as I suffer badly from problems with hands/wrist which is affected more by a laptop than desktop.

The desktop will be in my bedroom...is it at all possible to get a monitor that will be a TV too...or is that going to be costly?

Can you recommend any good deals?

How do I get wireless on a desktop?

Any recommendations for an all in one printer too? Definately want wireless and reasonable price on ink. Tempted by the wireless kodak all in one but have heard the yield on the ink isnt very good.

Thanks

Most TVs now have a Computer input socket, or you can get a Monitor with TV tuner, about the same price, but found monitors come with a longer warranty.

You need a wifi card or I have seen really small USB wifi devices that stick out of the USB socket about 2 mm.

I heard the kodak printers are poor builds too.

Would you be willing to build your own desktop or you have to buy ready out the box?

Are you planning on using the computer for more than powerpoint presentations and word?

Dell Outlet? Our use Dell to configure a PC that matches what you want. You could probably specify one with Linux and then get a shedload of Microsoft stuff cheap via the Uni.

Laptop with docking station with separate ergonomic keyboard and trackball?

If you preferred a laptop for portability, you could buy a full size external keyboard and mouse to plug in with USB. Then just prop it up on a few books to get the screen to the right height.

You can get most Freeview TV channels free on the web in quite decent quality if you will have internet available:

Do you really need a wireless printer? It will bump up the price.

tbh...I have tried laptop stands. keyboards and mouse. I still ended up with problems- screen height not ideal and too tempting just to use as a laptop.

Am help to build my own package if someone can point me in direction.

Wireless printer is desireable as partner has a laptop and just easier- although would be tempted by a super non wireless printer.

Computer will be used for powerpoint, excel, word and normal banking etc. Some photos upload.

What is linux? A different operating system?
  • The uni will probably have high-volume laser printers available in the library etc which may work out cheaper per page than printing on an inkjet.

You can watch TV (and use your PC as a video recorder) with a USB TV card - but reception in halls may be dire unless you have an aerial socket.

Uni networks may restrict TV downloading or filesharing.

Im a mature student so travelling from home but good tips for other students who may read this thread.

Uni is about 50 miles away so would prefer to have own printer - although anything in bulk will be done on uni site!

On the PC World website I purchased a refurbished Advent base unit (with keyboard and mouse) for £199.99 with Free delivery. Came with Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB of memory and 160GB Hard Drive. A good processor if all your going to do is internet, word processing etc.

Thought it was a decent deal.
