I see pupils getting taxis that are most definately not disabled or children with special needs, I would never criticise those who need it, but having witnessed able bodied children within 2 miles of school getting taxis' I do wonder what the criteria is

How can you visually tell a child with learning difficulties (eg autism, dsypraxia etc for) whom crossing the road who coordinating the school bus run would be a nightmare and potentially extremely dangerous. Also children who are in foster care and on the child protection register - should they be left to walk to school alone? Believe me, the ELBs can be very sticky about taxis and parents often have to fight long and hard to get them paid for - many parents spend a great deal of their own money on taxis or transport before the boards finally provide the transport.
When talking about children, we need to look beyond the obvious.
  • Maybe I used the wrong word I didn't mean see as in visually see them, I meant children from families that I actually know. Neighbours of mine, friends (term used loosely) that get this service and who most definately dont need or deserve it. I'm not debating what the childrens disabilities are, what I'm debating is how we cost effectively get them safely to and from school, I personally dont think hiring private taxis firms to ferry 2 or less children to school is very cost effective. Although I think we're distracting from the OP's thread.

Edited to add, I wouldnt expect any child to walk/travel to school alone either as I personally travel with my own child everyday and make my work fit around my child.

Well, no, since it was a school vice-principal from the SEELB who told me.

ah, it must be true then...

reminds me of this time a friend of a friend of my auntie's fourth cousin pulled over at a filling station and went into pay for petrol, while the attendant filled her up. the garage assistant pulled her into the back and told her not to go back to the car cos there was a man lying in the back seat with knives and ropes and all kinds of crazy harmful things...

"It's only being kept open because the CCMS wants there to be a Roman Catholic school presence there - never mind the cost it seems"

    address that.

Sorry, but I am rolling about laughing here .. I have read the article .. there are 3 children and yet they still need a flamin classroom assistant :rotfl: :rotfl: .. I dread to think if and how the teacher will cope in the real world.

Guess it just goes to show the waste of money there is in the system.

    Ivan

Just means that one of the children has special needs. Money for classroom assistants goes with the child and the child would have a legal right to the classroom assistant if s/he has a statement of special needs. I only have 12 in a secondary class but have 2 classroom assistants because 2 of the children have a statement. It sounds crazy but we are not allowed to use them elsewhere or for other children or classes.
