Cheap Web Hosting

If you're on the lookout for cheap web hosting, take a look at 1and1.

http://www.1and1.co.uk

You can get 1&1 Home for £3.99+VAT a month and the 1st year is free.

They do Linux & MS Hosting for the same price, and recently they've added the .NET framework and a MS Sql Server database to the Microsoft Home package.

There is a £4.99 setup charge.

The package includes a free domain name too.

So ... for 2 years the total cost is around £62, but if you order via QuidCo, you get £18 cashback ! http://www.quidco.com/1and1

So ... 2 years hosting including a domain name for £44 ... bargain !

10Gb webspace with unlimited traffic bandwidth

The "free 1st year" offer ends on August 31st.

I was with them a long time ago, and if you need anything remotely technical resolving, they have absolutely no clue. I wanted to know the password for MySQL on my Linux box, and the tech support guy put me on hold for 10 minutes, before coming back with "I can ping it, so it's definitely on". This was after I told him I was currently logged in.

Anyway, I gave the same advice to my friend, and he went with them anyway, and he's happy so far.
  • 1and1 is fine for "cheap" hosting, but wouldn't recommend them if you have a serious website or need good quality business hosting.

    worth checking out www[STRIKE][/STRIKE].ukhosting[STRIKE][/STRIKE].org[STRIKE][/STRIKE].uk/

good for light traffic, prices are free, 65p or £1.30 per month. if you want to run a website, you'll need to buy your domain name elsewhere.

I use this: http://www.zoka.cc/ for free. It's very good, and not had any problems - but I obviously do not run a busniess or anything serious like that. They force you to open a gmx email account (which is a very highly rated freemail service anyway) but you don't ever have to use it after registration.

That's an awful price (and 1&1 don't do themselves any favours with their customer service after being with them for a year in the past...), especially when http://bigwetfish.co.uk/hosting/ do it for £12 a year with the proper cPanel...

you're comparing apples & pears here .... the £12 a year package does not remotely compare with the £22 a year one I've bought

250Mb disc space compared with 10Gb on 1and1
30Gb bandwidth compared with unlimited on 1and1 ( although 30Gb is probably more than enough for most)
1and1 comes with free domain name ... thats extra on bigwetfish

Plus the bigwetfish hosting is Linux (which is typically cheaper than MS wherever you go) and I wanted MS hosting as my site is ASP.NET/C#

The package they do which compares better with the 1and1 package is their platinum one .. and that's £54.99 a year and you still have to buy a seperate domain name (and it's Linux!)
  • I used Host-ed.net

150mb free hosting I set mine up on it Ok

Reminds me; I had a hell of a time getting them to release my domain. They either had no idea what they're doing (likely) or they dally deliberately to try and get you to stay (also likely). Not many business would be happy to lose their entire web presence for nearly a month.

I'd suggest getting your domain from someone else in the first place anyway.
