Misplaced phone - How to make a claim

Hi guys,

sorry for this stupid question, but since I have misplaced my phone (one of 2) I need to get in touch with the Insurance company. In my case I am covered with the Halifax via Ultimate Current account.

I am pretty sure I am covered for the lost phone, but I dont want to make anything wrong to risk not getting my money.

Firstly, its an Iphone 3G and I have misplaced it. I have been looking everywhere, but can not find it, actually I am at a point where I think some one stole it, but I can not proof.

What do I have to tell the Insurance, in order to get the new phone and will I get a new phone or will I get money for a replacement, though an Iphone should be an Iphone, right?

I guess the will block the phone, actually I hope so no one can use it...

I am pretty pi*** but, hey thats why I have the insurance, right...?

Thanks for your help.

Markus

So according to your post it's firstly misplaced, then it's lost, then it's stolen! Any insurance co. will be suspicious if you tell them that story.

Well, it can not be misplaced, cos I would have found it, right? So I must have lost it and the stolen bit is just a thought I had, but anyway thanks for the heads up

I assume when I say, someone stole it, I need to go to the police, or dont I?

I am still looking for the phone.... everywhere :(

Many policies do not cover iphones - you need to check your policy ... and get your story straight!
    Gone ... or have I?

Considering the high-value and demand for iphone 3Gs, I'd imagine most insurance companies are veeeeeeeeeeeeery suspicious about claims for misplaced ones... :)
  • And if you havent registered it with them and you decide to do it now then claim later (as a friend of mine tried)... be prepared that they can check if its been switched on / registered to the network in that elapsed time and could well refuse the claim because its dodgy as hell!

If you go down the stolen route, you may well find the T&Cs say you must have reported it to the police within x amount of hours.

Personally, you should tell them the truth and if you have adhered to the policy then you gets ya cash.... if you havent adhered to your policy then why should you get it?
  • for god sake please do not waste our police officers time by reporting a phone stolen for insurance purposes
  • ^^ !!!!!! i presume its because you believe the OP is full of crap, otherwise why wouldnt you?

If the phone was genuinely nicked, of course you're gonna have to report it else you likely wont get paid!

Clearly not worth it for a £20 pay as you go, but you'd report a £400 mountain bike or item of jewellery so why not a phone?

have you actually read the thread? the phone was not genuinely nicked

the phone was lost, misplaced NOT stolen so why on earth would you report it as stolen?

    waste of police time, fraud

Our insurers insisted on a police crime number and the IMEI number. Even then they did not pay out, said she did not take sufficient care. My wife was honest - stated she did not know whether it had been stolen from or fell out of her handbag.

  • You haven't answered if you had registered your phone more than 15 days ago.. if not then you are not covered.
I have the Ultimate Reward account and have registered my phone with them. If your phone is not covered this way then the other option is to claim through home insurance but you will still have to report the phone missing to the police and get a reference number. Since you are not to sure on if its missing / lost / stolen then I think you might find it hard to claim either way as it doesn't sound too good. Good Luck!
