Last sunday my rented flat was flooded due to a stop clock bursting on someones boiler 2 floors up. My livingroom, kitchen, hall and spare room are ruined!
as the flat above is a hillcrest flat my partner called the housing straight away and they sent a plumber out to stop the water. Called my landlord in the morning (who is not the best) he then came out about 4.30pm and started the ball rolling.
We called our contents insurance provider (abbey) who told us to list everything that was damaged/potenially damaged:
The following day the first insurance company arrived to assess the damages to the non electricals, they were really good and noted down prices for things we paid for, they advised we would here soon.
We have been staying in temporary accomodation, which is another of my landlords flats, which is fully furnished which is fine in the meantime. We received a call from the electricals insurance who advised us that we must send in reciepts for everything or test the items if they work. (im sorry but im not testing anything thats been drenched in water) So they told me to send any photos of damage and photos of items potentially damaged. I emailed 80 photos of the damage to the flat and the items that were water damaged.
They told me they would not be able to take anything further without receipts!!!! on moving into the flat a year ago most items were gifts! i.e kettle, toaster, microwave etc. The only receipts i could find was for the tv and the xbox therefore they wont pay out!!
what do i do!!?
HELP

If you have photos (which you have sent) get prices from the place the presents were bought (argos catalouge / tesco website) and statements to say they were moving in presents
Your friends could be able to provide recieptsbaldly going on...0 -
Examine the policy. See if it says that you have to provide receipts. It probably doesn't. Write to them explaining the situation. Keep copies of all correspondence, and a note of all conversations. Most insurance companies will reject every claim they get. Unfortunately that's just the way things are. Don't give up, as the poster above says. Persevere. And don't take it personally0

They can't require you to have receipts as a condition of paying out. After all, what if you kept the receipts in an area that was flooded and they were destroyed?
You just need to prove you have the items you are claiming for and they were water damaged, which clearly you can easily do. You will just have to be firm with them.0 -
