Giving up the lottery - how do you do it?

I've seen the suggestion to put your usual lottery bet in a jar and if your numbers come up take out your winnings - and at the end of year there will be money left in the jar.
Now I don't know if I could do that - what my numbers came in and it was a big win - I don't know if I could ever recover from that.
I think if I stopped I'd avoid the results like the plague - because I'd rather not know.
What does anyone else think? How would you cope if your numbers came in big and you could only pay yourself £50 out of the jar?

That's it s*ds law. Play - don't win. Don't play - numbers come up.0 -
I only play if I have a spare couple of quid - always lucky dip so I don't know if my numbers came out on another week!Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0

OH and I have had the same numbers on the lottery since it started, and it got to the point where he would put extra lucky dips on every time too, and he was paying out between 10 and 20 quid a week (and not having many wins - none more than a tenner). I eventually put my foot down, and he agreed to cut down, but wouldn't agree to stop using the regular numbers in case they came up.
I set up a direct debit to pay for one line every Wednesday and Saturday, to avoid OH having the temptation of going to put the lottery on, as I know he wouldn't be able to resist more lines. I'm tempted to cancel the direct debit - and not tell him - but can you imagine having to explain it if the numbers did come up?

Its the statistics that mean you are more likely to have more money in the jar.0 -
I stopped the lucky dips too but my regular numbers are so imprinted on my brain that I'd recognise them.0

My bright OH said one week many years ago 'I did lucky dip numbers, our b'days, house number (3 digit) and 44'. So, now we have stopped doing it I DO avoid the results like the plague!! I also educated him on the definition of 'lucky dip'!! The scars are healing nicely now.
Still keep it at work though, £1 per week. You never know, and I am not going to be the last one left in the office with tumble weed blowing down the halls!!!Ciggie free 2am 21/09/06. Debt free 25/06/09.'It was such a lovely day I thought 'it's a pity to get up'' W. Somerset Maugham.0 -
