  • The National Insurance you pay on employment is Class 1, on self employment it is Class 2. These two sources of income are treated separately. I work full time but also have a little income from self employment, I have to complete a form to apply for exception from Class 2 National Insurance each year if my profits are below the NI lower earnings limit. The form does ask if I have income from employment and if so how much I earn, but this does not make any difference to my exception from Class 2 contributions.

Thanks, I obviously hadn't read all my paperwork properly, at the moment I have the exemption certificate and have been told to let IR know if I think I am going to exceed the NI limit.
