windows log on problem

on one of the users on our computer logs on, and it stays on the logging on screen for about 20 mins ( but all other users are fine, log on without any probs) and after that they get fed up and switch the comp off

the computer has a 20gb hdd with about 1.29gb free and 512mb ram, if that helps!

Any Ideas?

BTW running win xp pro

I don't know what's causing the problem but you could always log in as administrator, copy off all the user's stuff and then create a new user. It's often easier to sidestep a problem rather than solve it.

Have you tried looking at the event log to see if there is anything obvious happening when the user tried to log in?

  • Sounds like either a corrupt profile, or some spyware/malware/something in startup.. you could recreate the account with a slightly different name and copy all the favorites over.

  • I assume this pc is on the network and tries to contact the DC.

When you log on, unplug the network cable, this will prevent the box from trying to get info back from the DC and use the cached user profile. You can then get into eventvwr and see what errors you are getting. There are lots of reasons why this happens but most of them I have found has been DNS issues.

    Hope this helps

  • try running chkdsk c: /F/R then reboot, or do a system restore to an earlier time, or log into one of the other accounts, and do a full malware/antivirus/rootkit scan - see malware sticky thread if you don't have any scanners.
