Hi, my partner and I are both starting new jobs in Leeds and are looking for somewhere to rent. Neither of us know the area at all and advice is much appreciated.

Criteria

2/3 bedrooms
£400 - £600 pcm
Safe parking for 2 cars
South to East side of Leeds
Close to M62/M1
Good commuter links into city
Not Studenty

My work is at Quarry Hill and my partners' at Stourton, we are looking for a quiet, safe area and a nice local pub would be good. We are preferably wanting to travel to work by car but this will usually be with the aim to get there for 8am, although I would like the option of taking the train into the city at times without it taking too long.

Thank you in advance, sorry it's very specific but we really want to find somewhere nice first time round if possible.

When I was in my final year of Uni and after four years of being a student, myself and friends were pretty sick of the student areas like Headingley, Hyde Park, West Park etc, and were a lot more grown up and mature, so looked for somewhere a little further afield. We ended up renting a really nice house in Moortown, (Stainburn Crescent, if you must know!), which was a relativly nice area. Down the road there was Chapel Allerton which has some nice bars and small bijou restaurants, but you are still on the bus lines and close to the city centre.

It wasn't the greatest place to live, but it was a damn site better than the main student areas. Didn't notice any crime like I used to in Hyde Park, (cars being set on fire, cars being stolen by kids in front of you etc), and there were a lot more regular people living around you.

Much more pleasent. Hope that helps!

If you don't want to live in the nice northern bits then try Oulton or Rothwell

Thanks for your advice, although we are really looking for south to south east as we have regular drives to Sheffield, Derby and Doncaster to consider too.

the soutb and south east are generally the worst parts...but I think Rothwell is quite nice adn enar the motorway for Stourton. Not sure about transport links to Quarry House but it is near the bus station so if there is a decent bus service from Rothwell then it should be ok.
  • morley is brilliant for the motorway and <10 mins on train to city centre, not sure about the nice pub though!

Look along the M62 corridor, running from Leeds towards Manchester.

The Brighouse / Cleckheaton area has some nice properties in it that are reasonably priced. Cleckheaton (where I live) has been a "forgotten" area on the developers' maps until recently. It's been a run-down small mill town for the 20 years I've been here but now there are a lot of new properties as well as a large selection of accommodation for rental in all sectors. Local facilities are on the up-and-up.

There are lots of properties for rental in small villages around here too.

Cleckheaton and Brighouse are just a mile from the M62 - 20 minutes by motorway into Leeds, 20 mins to the M1, 40/50 mins to Sheffield or Manchester - all by motorway. Good rail connections to surrounding towns from Brighouse and Leeds, too. Leeds is on the East Coast Rail route and so directly connects to Scotland and London

Central Leeds is a shopaholic's delight, (I'm told!) but Bradford is very run down and has poor city-centre facilities.
