ITrip and IPod Nano not working together?

My daughter has just bought an IPod Nano and wants to use it in the car with her brother's ITrip. However it does not seem to want to work. We have tested it with her brothers 16gb IPod and it works perfectly but not with the Nano. Also an error message comes up on the Nano saying it can't charge with this ITrip. The ITrip is a griffin one but is a few years old but barely used. Any ideas anyone?

I popped into the Apple Store and the assistant said that if it is an older ITrip then it will not work with a new IPod Nano as the connector has been changed. The IPod was bought as a refurbished previous generation Nano from Apple a couple of weeks ago. So does that mean it is a 4th Generation?0
