LPs/cassettes to CDs-can I use this hi-fi??

Hi folks,

Sorry if this question has been answered before - I have read all the threads I can find about the subject but can't find the exact answers I need.

I'd like to copy all my music cassettes onto CD, and eventually all my vinyl, BUT can't figure out the best way to do it and what equipment I need.

I have a mini hi-fi system with 2 tape decks and a 3 disc CD player (no turntable).

On the back of the unit it has two AUX IN terminals, and in the manual it says:

"Connecting other equipment to your player

You can connect the audio left and right OUT terminals of a TV, VCR, Laser Disc player, DVD player or CD recorder to the AUX IN terminal at the rear of the system"

My PC is running Windows XP, and has on the back three ports: Line Out (lime), Line In (light blue), and Microphone (pink). There are also two similar ports on the front: pink and lime.

So my question is - what can I do, if anything, with my existing equipment, what cables etc. do I need, and when it comes to transferring the vinyl, what do I need to look for in a turntable, or could I do it with a hi-fi that has a turntable (have seen a decent cheap one in a charity shop).

Thanks so much for any help; I really need to get this sorted as I've nowhere to store all this music!

Zippy :)
That money talks
I won't deny.
I heard it once,
It said "Goodbye"

  • You can either use a turntable - amp - line in, or turntable - preamp (from maplins) etc, to line in. You can use audacity to do the recordings.. if you search the techie forum for audacity, there are several threads on the topic with links.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
