One of my friends have lost his data while formatting his Hard disk drive , is there any way to get his data back? I have heard that there are many recovery software, which one is the best?

I've used R-Studio with good results before, including recovering partition information - it isn't free though. If you search through the forum, you'll find mention of several other tools, some of which I seem to recall are free. The most important thing to do at the moment is not to install any new software or copy any other files on to the drive. Whatever file recovery software you use, install it on another PC, and add the disk drive you want to recover to that system - either as a second drive or using an external disk caddy.

Testdisc from CGSecurity is free and designed for such a situation. However please be aware that if any data has been written to the drive since and has ended up being written over the same area the original lost file(s) is in, then the original will be unrecoverable.
