insuring specialist equipment in transit

I'm a semi-retired nurse who does sessions of medicals from 0-3 days a week. For my work I have to take with me equipment and sundries (effectively a travelling office!) which I have calculated a replacement cost of £5,500. Other colleagues have told me they figure this is covered under their car insurance. I've just discovered that it's not! Nor is it covered under home insurance.

I've now been told that I need to get a specialist cover for this but haven't a clue where to begin. I've contacted a couple of the more popular insurance firms who currently supply me with car and household insurance and they have
simply told me that they don't do that kind of thing.

Anybody know where I should go for this? What's this kind of cover called?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Ring a commercial insurance broker - it sounds like you need/want a Goods In Transit policy.

Who does the equipment belong to ?
  • It's the property of the 'agency' that gives me the work but I am nominally self-employed, a subcontractor essentially.

I spoke with the firm's owner about it to confirm that she had a company policy to cover equipment she provided to do the work I am assigned. She said it was my responsibility to make sure it was covered against loss and damage in transit.

I've been doing this work for about 15 years but only 3 years for her. It never occurred to me that it was an issue before - I just assumed the company would have a blanket insurance to cover all equipment handed out to the nurses but she says she hasn't and it's my responsibility. I'm beginning to think this is wrong and as it's her equipment, it's her responsibility.

It's not amazingly easy to get cover for items that don't belong to you.

To get cover on those types of items is likely to be expensive.

    You could try Towergatemia http://www.towergatemia.co.uk/

I would try and pass the liability for the items back to the agency if possible though
  • I'll do that - thank you very much.
