What's in your organic veg box - photo edition

  • I used to use Able and Cole... which was excellent but not that cheap.

I now use Riverford which I find excellent... the recipes (linked to the delivered food) are also excellent.

I beleive the big (evil) super markets are trying to tap into this organic veg box.... and I personally would rather pay extra to help these smaller companies....

anyone know of any box schemes that would deliver to Scunthorpe, N Lincs?

I think that Scunthorpe is just inside the delivery area for this one, but you would probably need to phone and check as it is boarderline.

  • Wow, Wow and Wow again - that looks fantastic !!! Anyone get boxes from any of these in Scotland :
    Almond Valley ??
Grow Wild ?? or the new scheme from Pillars of Hercules ??
Really want to give one a go - but would like some opimions before taking the plunge (or if anyone knows of any other schemes that deliver in Fife ??)
  • I wonder why they feel the need to supply some of the veg in plastic wrappers though?

We're in Gloucestershire and use a local company called Slipstream Organics. They're a really small firm so we like supporting them. We pay £7 a week plus 75p delivery for a veg-only box every Tuesday (same driver each week which is good for rapport). We're a family of four, two of us vegetarian, and find we get plenty of veg for our needs.

Last week (no pic, sorry!) we had potatoes, carrots and onions (as every week), plus sweetcorn, leeks, purple broccoli (kids pulled a face at that but it tasted great!), patty pan, mushrooms, green chilli and a bag of apples thrown in for good measure!

We also buy our eggs from them as we like the local organic, free-range eggs they supply from farmers in the county.

I happen to know that Slipstream use many of the same suppliers as Riverford, only Riverford collect their produce then have to drive it back down to Devon (Dorset? Wherever they are) before driving it up again for delivery in Gloucestershire. This was a key factor in our decision to use Slipstream as we wanted to reduce the 'food miles', diesel emissions etc as far as possible.

    Hope this helps someone.:A
