Account Hijacked on Ebay

Well I just thought I'd share with you what happened to me because this came totally out of the blue for me.

I was checking my emails and noticed one came in saying "ebay listing confirmed" and I'm thinking well I havent listed anything so it must be a spoof email.

Being the careful person that I am, I opened up ebay rather than clicking on the email and there in front of me was this listing in my account.

What was horrifying was that someone was able to get into my account and list an item with a buy it now price for $6,500. This listing also had cost $90 to list - they'd put in extra pictures, listed it in as many places as they could etc to bump up the listing price.

I was horrified because I'm usually so careful with not clicking on links etc and havent a clue how they've managed to get into my account.

I knew ebay have no contact phone numbers and didnt want to email them because it usually takes a few days to get a response so I looked on the community section of ebay and typed in "hijacked account". Lots of people have had this happen to them and the answer seemed to be to go to the live chat thread where you can speak to a member of ebay. I managed to chat to an ebay member of staff who very kindly sorted all this out for me and got the listing deleted without me incurring any charges.

All I can say is it's made me extremely wary now. Please make sure that if you have an ebay account that you regularly change the password and that you dont make it easy for people to guess it - ie put in numbers, special characters etc.

Hope this doesnt happen to anyone else. It's pretty horrible to think people can access your personal information.

  • It sounds like you wouldn't have clicked on a dodgy link from a phishing e-mail, very strange how that could have happened, do you use a sniper bidding prgram by any chance?
  • HI

Thanks for your replies. No, I dont use any sniping programmes. I have now changed all passwords and am running various spyware programmes. Still trying to figure out how they hacked into my account.
