Growing Godetia as a pot plant.

Hi, has anyone grown Godetia as a pot plant? This is my second year of trying and they aren't looking too great. My idea was that they would be handy to take as a gift when visiting friends, as a change from jams/chutney, cakes etc. They seem to do okay in the garden but don't seem to be very bushy in a pot. This summer has been fairly horrible weather wise, so, I may have to just try another year. Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • I did lots of pots of godetia this year - oddly, none of them did very much. Yet the remaining few seeds I scattered thinly amongst the flower beds all came up and did well!!!!! I'm just speculating whether they do best with almost minimal care & not great soil, like a lot of other wildflowers & annuals.

My best successes with 'instant plants' have been cuttings of penstemons; they root very quickly from semi-ripe wood or this years green growth. Also, cuttings taken from petunias can be helped on to flower very quickly.

Thanks, I may give it another go next year, before admitting defeat. I do other houseplant type things and loads of pots of bulbs for gifts but I had thought that it would be quite nice to have something at this time of year, as an alternative to my cut flowers from the garden. They are looking kind of sorry for themselves, late season, very cold and dry early on, little sun and now rain and gales! Don't you just love the challenge of gardening?

Thanks, I may give it another go next year before admitting defeat. I usually have a stock of different houseplant things at different times of the yearlike bulbs etc. I thought the godetia might be good late Summer early Autumn if my cutting flowers were looking a bit sad as they are right now. Late season, cold and dry to start, not much sun and now rain and gales. Don't you just love the challenge of gardening.
