ATM gives less money than requested

I used to work with the team that was responsible for processing all RBS and NatWest ATM transactions. I am pretty certain that if it shows £40 on the mini statement that's what you will be debited. If you check your statement online it will be showing up today. I suspect the wrong button press theory is the right one, as far as I remember there's no way that the ATM would give you less money than you'd requested if that was all it contained, I think it would shut down rather than do that.
Anyway, if you do have any issue with the transaction you can query it with NatWest Customer services, all of the information about the transaction is recorded and can be interrogated in the event of a dispute (you might have to wait a little while as I'm not sure that CS have access to the data, it may have to go to the ATM Operations team).0
