VAT mistake refund

I rent a garage from my landlords (Leger Homes..ALMO for Doncaster Council). On my recent invoice for the garage I noticed some small print which stated that housing tenants were not charged VAT on renting a garage. Looking at my previous accounts I have been charged VAT for at least the last 5 years. When I contacted them they agreed I should not have paid VAT but said that they could only refund for this financial year (since April 2010). I think I should be able to claim back all the VAT overcharge ?
