Motorbike Insurance for a 17yo

Hi All

Any of you got experience of purchasing motorbike insurance?
My lad is 17yo (18yo in March 2011), he passed his CBT March 2009 and has had insurance on various scooters since then so he has 1 full year no claims. He needs TPFT excess upto £300. The bike is a Skyjet 2007, 125cc. We have been shopping around for quotes but they vary wildly. Some will provide third party only because it is a Chinese/Import. And I don't know what they mean by 'grey import', I thought it was the colour of the bike, duh
He contacted one today called Rampdale Ltd Insurance Brokers and their quote is the cheapest so far but I have never heard of them, so if you have then please let me know.
His bike has MOT and tax just needs insurance and I have told him if he can raise half the insurance money I will lend him the rest.
He is itching to get on it and nagging me constantly, it's like being pecked to death by a chicken
BTW, he will need it for college in September, particularly because me and his dad are going on holiday for two weeks and he is going to be home alone.
Any help and advice welcome

Rampdale is an insurance firm that specialises in Chinese scooters. A few years ago, hardly any of the insurers would quote for a Chinese bike (many of the major ones still won't), so Rampdale worked directly with the manufacturers, importers and insurance companies to make suitable policies available.

They are a bona-fide company - not with them myself, but they are well respected within the industry.
  • Grey import is a bike not officially imported to the uk if that's any help
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • You can do a similar sort of thing to getting car insurance.

Go Compare can do motorcycle quote comparisons. http://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk/ is also worth a look.

Fill in all the details about his licence, CBT, scooter/bike and see what it comes up with.

TPFT isn't always cheapest. I think the Bike Insurer website makes it easy to compare different cover levels.

Also, encourage him to get his full bike licence and take further training. The Enhanced Rider Scheme or the IAM http://www.iam.org.uk can give him extra training and make him a safer rider - they can also reduce insurance costs too because of the perceived lower risk.

I'm fairly sure his bike counts as a grey import if that's any help. Another to try are Lexham.
