Unhappy with quality of engraved tankard.

Hi,
My first ever post on here but I feel I need help with this. Last Saturday I paid to have a tankard engraved with a message on the back and the crest of a football club on the front.
Having nothing comparitive in store to show me to give me an idea the quality the crest would be the owner reassured myself and my fiancee that the image would be bold, detailed and "spot on" amongst other positive expressions. My future step-daughter picked it up for me yesterday and when I opened it, I never had that "yes, that's just what we wanted" thought in my head. Initially I thought they had forgotten to put the crest on then as I turned it, the light caught hold of it and you can "just" about see it plus it is only about half the height of the tankard. I expected the crest to fill most of the height of the tankard and it certainly isn't bold as informed, the image is barely there.
So basically I am not happy and am taking it back tomorrow to let them know and am just wondering as it is such a personalised item (and therefore of no use to them) what are my rights with regard to a replacement and to be honest, I would prefer my money back actually. The message on it was fine by the way.
Fingers crossed I can get an informed response from some of you clever folk on here.
My thanks in advance,
Babadax.

Well it's a tough one!
Was there an agreement/discussion on the size of the crest?
Most tankards have a small-ish crest (well depends on the size of the tankard), so he of done a "traditional" style engraving.
As for the quality of the engraving they should be able to redo it on top of the existing crest.
But again as it's a personal item, not sure on the legal side of things, best thing is to keep calm and discuss your options with the engraver and give them the ability to rectify the situation first.:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0 -
Thanks for the reply.
It is a smallish crest yes and maybe a "deeper" engraving (if possible) would help raise it's overall profile and prove satisfactory.
It's for my best man and if it didn't give me the "Wow" factor when I opened it I can hardly see it happening to him.
Good idea, I am going to do the calm "not happy cutomer" thing and give them the opportunity to rectify the situation first. Failing any "positive" outcome we'll probably have a ceremonial smelting.
Didn't even mention it was covered in fingerprints as well, no attempt was made to clean it up whatsoever. Either way, I won't be recommending the place to anyone...saying that, anyone that saw it at the moment would probably say "where did you get that ???" and when I tell them they'd make that decision for themselves anyway.0
