Hays Recruitment Jobs?

Ok two sides to this question,

1. My OH has been invited to an interview with Hays recruitment today, she has the impression it is to work for hays themselves as a recruitment agent (or whatever their actual job title is). i was wondering if anybody knew anything regarding how these people are pauid and what sort of experience etc Hays normally look for as she has never done anything HR related before and has a history of being in customer services and managing a small sales team so quite different from what Hays do. She did however get told that they are keen as she speaks french and italien which again to me seemed slightly irrelevent unless a load of french and Italian people are suddenly looking for work in Scotland!

2. My oh has just been made redundent thus why she is looking for a job and I was wondering what people thought of hays with regards to using them as an agency if she doent get a job with them, again considering her background and also myself who is interedted in moving company as soon as the recession allows me to! PS I am an engineer if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • Recruitment is predominantly a sales job, there is nothing HR about it. Hays, (and I speak from experience of someone who gets them canvassing every day!), are very hot on getting their consultants on the phone to canvass for business. Recruitment is all about hitting a sales target, which is made up of the fees billed to clients for placing someone in the job. I don't use them as an agency as I find them too pushy. They phone me, incredibly over famailiar, and ask what roles we are looking to fill. I ask them what they know about my company and invariably get the response, 'Um.' No research = no chance.

Just my experience of them. :-)

I have to say I can understand how Hays are more like a "Sales" company than an HR company from that perspective but would have still expected them to look for HR training or experience. with regards to your comment on the research thing then I have to say that feedback from others has been that Hays are quite good at getting to know "you" (candidate) so that they know how to place you in suitable jobs and this is something that somebody has given them great feedback for as it saves getting lots of useless CV's so I wonder if its just the area branch that is either good or bad in each of our areas. I will at least tell her to know the companies she calls tho from your comments ;-)

    Thanks again.

  • I've never been represented by Hays as an agency, so I cannot say what they are like. But I think any consultant worth their salt should spend time getting to know and understand a person before representing them to their clients. It's a waste of everyone's time if the person turns up for an interview and they haven't been briefed fully on what the company expects and what the role is.

Best of luck to your OH!

i agree that a consultant should do those things but some of the consultants that my work use dont and I think they make Hays look very very good because of it! Tho its just something I would "expect" if it was me!

Btw she has had the interview and thinks it went well. apparently her lack of HR experience is not a problem as they where more interesrted in the fact she can speak French & italien as well as the fact she has previous experience doing background checks on people from a previous job.

Hoping to hear back early next week, we have our fingers crossed!

Have to fax time sheets to them before 11am on the tue, Or post them which is no good when you recieve you time sheets on a saturday and cannot get them signed until a monday.

Oh and this week they have given me no work, I previously signed of now i got to sign on again and have to wait weeks for any benefits.

I no longer work for hays

This is the issue with all recruitment agencies,, plus your holiday and sick pay which you accrue mysteriously goes missing..

I've done work for Hays on and off over the past seven years and I've found them to be really good - one of the better agencies. I only do temping with them and they have always found me a job within a week or so (often the next day) and paid better than average wages. Sorry you had such a bad time with them. I think the standards differ from branch to branch though. My hometown branch is great, all the consultants are fab. However the branch in the city where I went to uni wasn't so great. I used the teaching agency a couple of months ago and found that to be great too.

I agree that the standards change from branch to branch but I have to say I have had problems with Hays twice before, once for temping and once for permanent. Once they misused by details after me explicitly asking them not to do a certain thing and another time they were very unprofessional about ending a temporary placement.

I have to say they are the one agency that it doesn't matter what job comes up with them I do not use them.

evilm & chika - it sounds like you have used hays to find work. My oh was offered a job with Hays and not using them as a recruitment agency so these issues are not worrying me too much. Tho thanks for your input.

jhorsfield & shaun - It sounds like you had a bad time with them and it seems that the thought is that this is a trend with regards to all agencies. I have to say I have no experience of working or using an agency but I will ensure that my oh is well informed about keeping a track of monitoring holiday and pay issues so that they dont mess her around and if they do...well it may be the start of job hunting again, tho fingers crossed their are no issues with the branch she is working at.

  • I used to work for Hays, and it IS a sales job. I have no HR experience whatsoever, and they were more bothered about cold calling, and selling, than any sort of HR experience. When I worked for them, it was a very low basic, and money had to be earned with commission against targets etc. Also had targets for outgoing calls
