TSB Visa card

Had a bit of an eye opener tonight.

I took out a monthly subscription and paid by credit card, cancelled it last month only to have the payment taken again.

I rang TSB card services to block this company and was told
" No can do! when you give any company your card number they can reapply for a payment any time they like and we have to make the payment"
"Only way out is to block the card, issue a new one together with a new PIN and claim the money back as a fraudulent transaction"

So,
Is this
1. Correct
2. Common practice with all cards
3. A good incentive to dump on line credit card purchases?

My suggestion that I apply for a new card after every transaction to prevent fraud was not well recieved but it seems I now must make time to check my balance daily if I want to monitor fraud.

  • If it's a must have for a smallish amount use a pre-paid card with a miniscle balance apart from when a payment you want to make is due. It might NOT mean that you don't owe the money but you're in control for a few pence extra (with the right card).

    1. Correct

    No.

Companies cannot just apply for payment whenever they like.

They can only do this if they have a "Continuous Payment Authority". In this case the issuer WILL honour the request and you need to have the merchant cancel the CPA - the issuer cannot do this.

    2. Common practice with all cards

    Yes.
    3. A good incentive to dump on line credit card purchases?

No, just don't use your card for recurring subscriptions.
  • Thanks to you both.

Will follow up the CPA angle in the morning since it was a non recurring payment

Surely a monthly subscription is by definition a recurring payment? For a monthly subscription they will have set up a Continuous Payment Authority.

Always cancel a CPA in writing (to whoever is charging the subscription, not TSB) and keep a copy of that letter. Then if they charge your card again, you can send a copy of the letter to TSB as evidence that they charged an unauthorised payment to your credit card after you had cancelled the subscription.

This assumes that in the small print, you did not agree to a minimum term contract for the monthly subscription. If you did, TSB will honour the charges and will not refund them because the company can provide evidence of the contract.

Yes I did cancel the CPA and notified the site.
Contacted them again today and commented on the lack of replies, mentioned "small claims court"
and by tonight they say a refund is on it's way
