Does an insurance claim run out?

HELP!
A pipe burst in my property in April and I have been battling with builders to get estimates for my insurance claim. I am worried if claim has a limited time? Can you help me out with this. Is it common for home insurance claims to be time restrained and if so, what is the usual time limit.
Also can you give me some advice of how the insurance company will compensate me. Will they pay the builder directly or release money to me to pay for the builder? Same with contents?
Thanks
Haji

There's no time restraint but if you don't keep your insurers updated, they may think you are not pursuing it and close their file (which is no big deal as they can always open it again, but it might cause a delay).
I suggest you ring them and tell them of the problem - they might be able to instruct their own contractors to do the work, which would save you a lot of bother.
Regarding payment, it's usually the case that if you instruct the builder, you pay them and claim the money back. If they instruct them, they will pay them direct (less the excess).0
