Where do you live that there are child snatchers on every corner?!

Best keep him in till he's about 35 I reckon.

I'm not saying that, but at nearly 5 he will not be playing in the street without me, sorry to be a responsible parent!

My son is 5 i dont let him out to play on his own, he knows how to cross the road safely but there are no kids round here that are similar ages even then i dont think i would not worth the risk in my opinion.

My kids are 8 and 5. we live in a vry quiet area in a cul de sac but there is no way on earth my kids would be out this time of night, they are allowed on the front with me watching them until 6 and in the back yard ( which is enclosed ) until 7pm. no your not being overprotective
i think your neighbours probably dont give a damn about the kids and are probably very fond of out of sight out of mind, untl of course something happens to them and its everybodys elses fault bar there own

I feel very much like the most evil mummy in the world now after reading ages of kids allowed to play out ...

My youngest daughter is just 11 and its only been this last couple of months that she has been allowed out to play with her friends in the evenings.

I must say that it was different when my other 2 where that age, as we lived on a small island in Scotland, and we didnt have very close neighbours, and they made camps, and treehouses etc in the garden, we moved to England a couple of years ago and they then made friends in village and started to go to the 'rec' in evenings etc.

I try not to be overprotective of my children, but they are so naive compared to 'town' kids... they grew up in a place where you didnt lock doors, and everyone knew everyone, you could leave your baby sleeping in the car while you popped to the co-op, and if they woke up someone would come and shout you. We also didnt lock car doors, and for many years I never locked my car door, to the extent that once on a trip to the mainland I went to lock car door, and my key got stuck in the door :o... I had to call RAC man out to help me!! :D

my daughters just turned 5 and i would never let her out on her own. never. even though she knows to check the road before crossing, it just takes that split second of over excitement while playing that could make her run across without looking. i see kids of the same age out playing by the road and so on their bikes and stuff. i just could'nt let my daughter do that. plus just last week a 5 year old was knocked off his bike and killed by a lorry (on a quiet road i should add) in one of the neibouring towns, i also remember a 4 year old boy being knocked down while on his scooter crossing a road and my mum was the car behind the car that knocked him down and she was the first one to the scene to give first aid, i think her telling me what she saw has scared me a bit too.

but 5 is too young, give them AT LEAST a year at school first to be a bit more savvy before letting them out. i know i wasn't allowed out to play till i was at least primary 2.
