New bathroom taps - forum plumbers advice pls

We are redoing our bathroom, managed to get a brand new steel bath for £10 at local dump !! :T :rotfl: The stupidity of some people amazes me, but there you go.

We need to get new basin taps and new bath/shower mixer taps. I know you can buy budget taps but as we live in a very limey area, the taps get a lot of punishment. Is there a brand which you have found is good value longer term. Also if there are any plumbers in the forum, can you give me some advice. My DOH wants to put ordinary bath taps at the current end and a wall type shower mixer at the other end of the bath with a screen.... personally I think a shower mixer is fine as its only a little house not a palace !, so any info to help my case will be gratefully received :rotfl: :j
"Many a mickle maks a muckle"... but just how many mickles do you need ? dont suppose a piece of string and a ha'penny will do this time:rotfl:

Bristan are about the best compromise for quality/value for money.

    Also try http://www.hudsonreed.com/

Similar sort of product, although I'd rate Bristan slightly above them.
  • Thanks to plumb1 and Alan for pointing me to Bristan and glad to see Hudson Reed are considered good by professionals as that was one I had been looking at. Do you know if we can have the sort of set up my OH wants ?

If you are in a lime riddled area - don't go for anything with a ceramic disc. Mechanical taps are better in that situation.

If you have a reasonable amount of water pressure and a non mains pressure feed to the bath (i.e. it comes from a storage tank in the loft) then a mixer will be probably suffice.

If you have a combi boiler then it really depends how much water flow you have , if that's too low it may be worth looking at installing an electric shower.

Hudson Reed aren't the best taps you'll buy by quite a long way, but they are a whole world better than B&Q or Homebase own brand products. You get a lot of product for your money and it looks pretty good, I'd rate the internal workings and castings on Bristan taps as a higher quality though.
