Recording to DVD Recorder to DVD

Hi

I have got a 'Panasonic DMR-EX773EBK 160GB HDD DVD Recorder' and have got some footage from our camcorder saved on its hard drive, am now trying to save it to dvd but am struggling and hoping someone is able to help!

I have been using a DVD+RW but it always says either disc not recognised or disc is non recordable (depends which way you go into menus/functions as to which it displays!)

Has anyone any ideas what has happened / how to do it?

Thanks

It could be a faulty blank disc, or it could just be a type the Panasonic doesn't recognise (though mine seems quite capable of handling everything I've ever fed it).

Have you formatted the disc? It will need that doing before you can use it. It's buried in the mess of Panasonic menus under disc management, ISTR.

My first thought was that Panasonic didn't used to support +R or +RW disks, but according to their site this one does. But it does appear that it only support 2.4x amd 4x disks. Could it be that your disks aren't officially rated for these speeds and that the drive chooses to ignore them?

to be honest the user guide just baffles me - there is sooo much to it! thought it would be simple:D

what sort of discs would be best to try then? I think the ones I were trying 8x DVD+RW

I so do not understand the differences between the + and -, RW, R etc! They are out to confuse me:D

Am sure its not the disc thats faulty as they are brand new - have tried two new ones - thought both were out of the same packet - and neither worked

I tried formatting the disc but it wouldnt let me do it on the dvd recorder so tried it on a computer but it still didnt work:D

Try using a -R or -RW in Panasonic machines.
The + discs in Panasonic's tend to have restrictions on what you can use them for.

I don't have a panasonic but in the past I've found dvd rw's to be problematic in set-top dvd recorders. I would suggest trying dvd-r discs first unless manufacturer states otherwise. Can you transfer to memory card??

They do support 4x DVD-RW disks, according to the manual.

Can we presume you have already followed the advice in the manual on page 57, also as referenced on page 11?

I will have a look for those

Dont think there is a memory card slot on it, there is a USB slot but would I be able to record to it?

I will have to have a look at the 'rec for high speed copy setting' and see what it is set to - that is when I find where its at:D

Have looked at the formatting section but it wont let me format the disc as it says the disc isnt recognised/isnt recordable

Actually, despite that often being claimed, I've found mine just as happy with +R discs and, in fact, the only way the 'compress to fit' feature work is with +Rs. In fairness, I have't tried it with the 'hen's teeth' Panasonic DVD RAM discs, though!

I've had no problem with rewritables, either, though they are more problematical in theory, I agree.

Reading back, you may have answered your own question. I'm not sure they will handle 8x RWs, either. 4x works fine on mine and I would stick to those.

I assume you want to keep the footage on the disc permanently - if so, why aren't you using a permanent disc, rather than a re-writable?

I use DVD-R in my Pana recorders for the stuff I want to keep. DVD-RAM for the temporary stuff that maybe needs to be edited down onto DVD-R
