Problem with people who gave me their pedigree cat

I rehomed a pedigree cat - she is in very good health and has settled in like she's always lived here. Even sleeping at the bottom of my bed.

I know she has excellent pedigree and made a few enquiries on line today and spoke to the Cat Society today and they confirmed that she is registered but would not give me her pedigree name as I didn't have the pink slip. I had explained that I only have her kitten vet paperwork; hence i was able to give them the breeders name and date of birth. They traced her via this.

The previous owner said she is hesitant to hand over pedigree ownership paperwork incase we resell the cat. She explained that she'd paid over £1000 for the cat; the cat has also had a litter of kittens prior to us getting her. She was spayed before we got her. I said she didn't have to tell us how much the cat was worth; it's made me worried about letting her out now! And that wasn't the reason i responded to her ad - she asked for a good home and no payment. And we loved her from the moment we saw her.

This all started cause i asked her for the cat's pedigree name.

I've also been told by another breeder that it maybe because she has contracts with the kittens owners to retain a % of litter income and that if she hands over ownership to us then the money goes to us not her (I don't know when she had her litter as the medical history question is also being ignored).

Is this true? I would gladly give it to her, i just want to keep the cat.

I know it's only been less than a week but I'm taking the cat to our vet next week and she want's the cats full medical history and this is when the stalling began.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

And before anyone sends any nasty comments - cat is never going to be resold. I just need to know what to do to

1. get her full medical history - also needed to answer Pet Insurance questions.
2. don't want anyone coming back to be re a problem with kittens, this is if and when i get legal paperwork.
3. Kids want to put her in cat shows and we need paperwork for that (I think).

I think it all comes down to money.

I only buy pedigrees & a condition of this is that I get the papers.
I am happy to pay more for a GCCF properly registered kitten & have the papers than a thoroughbred (but no papers) kitten/cat.

If you pay pedigree prices (proper price) you are entitled to the papers. If you pay £100 you can't really expect to get them - they may give them, but you haven't paid pedigree prices.

Confused about point 2, you also say she is speyed?
  • just be happy you have cat, tell the vet the truth. why would you need her papers for that

Yes if you show you will need the transfer of ownership which you send to the GCCF(?). They then transfer offically ownship to you.

Contact the previous owner and explain you are taking the cat to the vet for a check up and its injections if needed and you need the card showing what injections it already has and when given. It should show what vet the last owner used and you can hopefully get the information about medical history.

As for the pink slip, the previous owner didn't give you this which means in a way they will always be recognised as the owner of the cat. So if it goes missing  they can still claim the cat back as you have no proof you own it. The Cat Club will not get involved as its between you and the previous owner.

I have never heard of a owner getting a per centage of a litter of kittens if said kittens are bred at a later date?????? Once a kitten is sold and they get the papers from the breeder and register kitten in their name. Unless there is a private agreement between breeder and buyer. In that case the original breeder of the cat has be the one to have the % of the litter not the woman who gave you the cat. Strange but true cats and dogs and their selling legally fall under the sale of goods as property. Very few breeders will sell a kitten to someone who is not already a breeder and allow them to bred from a kitten. Because cats can be shown neutered most will specify on sale that the kitten can only be entered on the non breeding register of the GCCF. So I am wondering the previous own bred the cat without premission of the GCCF and the original breeder and is worried this will all come out if she gives you the papers????

Sorry this is confusing I know. :p

I can't help with the ownership issue, but as for the vets history - ask the breeder for their vets details - when you register with your vet, they will most likely ask you for a previous vets so they can obtain the medical history (with consent). This is in the best interests of the cat - the 'new' vet treating her really does need to know her history!

I hope you can at least get that, if not the other paperwork (sorry I am not very well up on pedigree cats)
Is she microchipped? If not, get it done ASAP registered to YOU! If so, then ask the vet for a change of ownership form.... can't remember off the top of my head if the old owner has to sign the form - i think it depends on the microchip company..... either way, the old owner should sign this, as you have paid money to become the cats owner - as was said before - cats are seen as property in law, so old owner really should sign microchip paperwork over to you!

PS - if a breeder doesn't have their animals chipped, and doesn't insist on this (and vax etc) for their kittens, then my respect for them drops....
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Im not sure why you want the breeding/pedigree details if you say you just got her as a "free" pet cat. You dont need those for the vet or insurance forms. Just ask the owner for her vets name because you want the cats health history for the new vet. Its not essential - hundreds of pets are rehomed from rescue every year when the new owner has no idea of their past health history. Ive never heard a vet require a full medical history when they see an animal.

TBH Im rather amazed she gave away a cat worth over £1k and also had it spayed first? Did you say she is a breeder?. She sounds like a very responsible owner and I think you may find she starts having second thoughts if you pressure her too much for pedigree details.
  • I can quite understand why she doesnt want to hand over the papers - it sounds like she wanted her cat to go to a good home, who would love it for its personality, not its pedigree.

Sadly, some people do claim to want to rehome animals then resell them - giving over the papers increases the cats resale value, and ultimately she has rehomed the cat with you on the understanding that you want a pet, not a commodity.
  • your right - she has brought laughter back into our house and has settled brilliantly.

I just didn't want to risk losing her. I thought if the previous owner still had her ped papers it mean't she might try and take her back which would break
    my kids hearts.

She definately has a 110% loving home - no doubt about that. I guess I just thought there was an issue with her medical history that might have been highlighted by us having her ped papers or something.

I also guess that the previous owner needs to keep them to complete the ped papers for the litter of kittens or some other reason.

But after nearly 3 weeks I've still had no replies to the first emails I sent - but the cats fit as a fiddle and has my kids fussing over her no end!

So we're happy and the cats happy and that's what counts.

    Thanks for the advise.
