HI
Am a novice at buying computers. Basically am after a PC for school work and maybe a couple of downloads and playing afew games. Just a good all rounder.
Is one on dell for £299

and pc world also look ok

The pc world one has a dvd writer in it which would for me be essential, so would go for that one.

However, neither of these pc's will be up to playing games due to the integrated graphics card and lack of RAM.

if you could afford 40 extra this would be worth a look, dell e-value code UKDHSONL-D10C15

I can't believe PC World or Dell are still selling computers with 256MB of ram! For windows XP to be useable it needs at the very least 512MB, especially considering all the rubbish the computer will come pre-loaded with.

Personally I think going with Dell is probably a better choice than PC World, maybe you should have a look out for some good deals on the Dell Outlet site though, you should be able to pick up a good PC on there for not much.

As I said make sure you have at least 512MB of memory, aim for 1024MB (1GB) and it'll be zippy.

If you can find a friend who knows about computers they'd be able to build you a much better machine for the money though!
  • The upgradability on low-spec pc's are pretty poor. So you will be pretty much stuck with the machine as is.

It's worth spending that little bit extra for quality components and upgradablilty.

I've got many friends that have bought low spec systems from PC World and regretted at a later date.

That is true for the processor, but hard disks, RAM and optical drives can be upgraded very easily. They are also horribly overpriced direct from the PC vendor.

very true a dvd writer can be had for about £20 and 512mb ram for £25ish but if you buy these addons form dell/pcw etc they will charge you more than double usually
